![]() I don’t know if this applies today due to reformulations but some examples from the past would include Urban Decay All Nighter vs. Sometimes the ingredients would change slightly (different concentrations or omission of botanical extracts) to reflect the cheaper cost but other times it would be exactly the same. Because often times, manufacturers would repackage a high end product into a low end packaging and reduce the cost. Some things can be similar in formula but come in totally different colors, and that’s fine to mention because there’s probably people out there that never bought the original because they didn’t like the colors it came in and this “dupe” could be perfect for them since it’s different colors, but at least mention it! Don’t act like it’s a dupe as in same color - maybe just in formula □♀️ĭupes are supposed to mean that the ingredients list is 90-100% the same. Then you got people who call something a dupe because it has like similar packaging but isn’t even remotely similar in color or formula at all! I’m like how is that a dupe like by any definition of one? □ And they won’t even mention how the color is completely wrong. But, I also love how she’ll explain if it’s a dupe just in color or dupe in formula, wear time, etc. I love how Jen always tries to find new ones that haven’t been talked about. But a lot of some YouTubers videos have the same dupes that have been pretty well known. Like, why make it if you’re not finding something that’s different? I get not everyone watched everyone else, so for some they might be just seeing them for the first time. I feel like so many “dupes“ videos others do are filled with the same ones over and over again. Yes! I love her dupe videos! And she often doesn’t have a video full of ones I’ve seen before. It's like people don't understand that minor undertone, depth, and shade differences that don't show up in swatches as much, can show up wildly different on the lips in person. Just ended up having to repurchase the original, plus I'm stuck with 5 lipsticks I hate. ![]() Now I have tons of ugly mauve-leaning lipsticks sitting around when I was looking for a neutral-cool beige. I recently really suffered looking for a mac velvet teddy dupe. One could have just bought the original instead of testing out 5 remotely similar "dupes" (newsflash, they're not!) That said, this new culture of calling anything even in the general neighbourhood a dupe is so pernicious, because you just end up wasting tons more money and time going and buying these inaccurate matches. Also people who identify dead on dupes for discontinued products are a godsend. So I find immense value there.Īnother commenter mentioned how many brands repackage a formula and sell it across multiple brands they own at different price points- it's extremely helpful to identify those products, especially since makeup prices have been skyrocketing recently. ![]() ![]() I don't love the CT pillowtalk matte lipstick formula- it's too dry, and dupes have helped me find the same colour in a much better formula. One that I've found recently that has worked like this is the elf halo glow for the ct airbrush flawless fliter (extremely similar finish, the elf is even better and more refined in terms of glow and perfecting the skin than the ct) There used to be an idenitification of real dead on dupes before- things that either looked or performed really exactly alike, or both (for example mac diva and maybelline divine wine) where one was completely interchangeable for the other colour wise (I even personally preferred the formula of the maybelline).
